Course description

Manual Handling training informs learners that Manual Handling is more than simply lifting objects. Manual Handling includes activities such as pushing and pulling objects or repetitive movements.

The CIEH Manual Handling course looks at how different activities can cause harm and how accidents can be prevented. Manual Handling courses enable learners to undetake risk assessment to make informed decisions about how a lifting, moving or other manual handling activity should be approached.

Risks include trips, slips or other falls caused by obscured vision, overloading or general poor decision making. Manual Handling training courses communicate how these risks should be controlled via proper planning, correct moving and handling technique or seeking assistance from a colleague to minimise the risk of back injury, sprains, strains or other personal injury. Candidates should understand what a reasonable weight, sized object or lifting height for them to lift or move an object is and the techniques that should be used.

Manual Handling course candidates receive beneficial guidance of where they can obtain additional information on Health & Safety, be that online or through an Health and Safety officer within an organisation. Helping employees take charge of their own Health and Safety will serve to create a self improving culture of Health and Safety within an organisation.

Employers have a duty of care that where necessary employees should receive Manual Handling training. As laid out in the Health & Safety At Work Act 1974, once an employee has received proper training and guidance this duty of care has been met.

This responsibility continues, that appropriate equipment including personal protective equipment such as gloves and safety footwear must be supplied for each lifting or moving task. It becomes down to the employee to work by the methods they have been shown during CIEH Manual Handling training, if they decide to ignore this guidance and risk injury the onus of responsibility lies with the individual.
